Who was Nikki Mitchell?
On August 21, 1954, Fort Worth, Texas, welcomed the birth of a visionary. Nikki Mitchell saw possibility everywhere, in life, in people, and in the world around her. After successful import and artistic ventures in Texas, Nikki made her way to Nashville, where she became President of the company representing legendary country artists Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. She led the company for 22 years, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry and the lives of those around her. But Nikki’s greatest adventures extended far beyond the music business.
In 1998, she made history as co-captain of a single-engine aircraft on the Bridge of Wings flight, circumnavigating the Northern Hemisphere. During the Russian leg of the journey, Nikki and her team flew in formation alongside two Russian women pilots, retracing the historic 1938 Flight of the Rodina. The commemorative flight brought together two countries while honoring the courageous Soviet women pilots whose remarkable achievements had been largely forgotten.
In December 2010, Nikki was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given a prognosis of just three months. Nikki refused to accept that as the end of her story. She sought out leading medical experts across the country, pursued every opportunity available to her, and continued to live with the extraordinary determination and optimism that defined her. After 31 months of courageously battling pancreatic cancer, Nikki embarked on her final adventure on July 9, 2013. But her mission did not end there.
Nikki’s greatest wish was to help save others from the devastating impact of pancreatic cancer. Driven by her belief in the power of research and the importance of early detection, Nikki chose to participate after her death in a groundbreaking circulating tumor cell research program facilitated by Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her donation became the first to provide an extensive volume of data to researchers, helping advance the scientific understanding of pancreatic cancer.
Today, the Nikki Mitchell Foundation carries that dream forward. We believe no one facing pancreatic cancer should have to face it alone, and that the future of this disease must be changed through compassionate support, innovative research, and earlier detection. Why the white feather?
Nikki often spoke about the white feathers that appeared throughout her life, always at moments when she needed a sign. During her first trip to Moscow, a young man asked her, “How do you know you are where you are supposed to be?” Without hesitation, Nikki answered, “Whenever I find a white feather.” He then held up a long, beautiful white feather, placed it in a leather box, and sent it home with her.
Years later, during the final weeks of Nikki’s life, her loved ones searched for that feather, which had disappeared after her flight around the world. When Rhonda, Nikki’s friend and future founder of NMF, told her it could not be found, Nikki simply replied, “That’s okay. It isn’t meant to be found now. One will show up when you need it.”
In 2017, NMF faced a difficult year. Unable to hold its annual fundraising concert, the organization relied solely on its golf tournament, knowing the $35,000 raised the previous year would not be enough to continue supporting patients. Yet they moved forward. In the middle of the tournament, a breathtaking cloud in the unmistakable shape of a white feather appeared in the sky and remained throughout the day.
That year, NMF raised $270,000. The feather had appeared again, just when they needed it most.
